The EMUI 5.0 was first introduced alongside with Huawei Mate 9 as the next generation of Huawei's custom Android skin. Slowly, the update starts to trickle down the other devices, bringing the new Android 7.0 Nougat to the devices. The new update introduces a brand new aesthetics overhaul that aims to simplify the usability of the phone. Gone is the cyan and white colour theme and welcome the Aegean Sea blue + black theme that is classy to the eyes.

On top of interface updates, the EMUI 5.0 also introduces the Machine Learning Algorithm, which studies our usage habits and optimises the phone's processing priorities in order to fit our requirements. The end result is a phone that understands and adjusts its performance according to our needs.

Honor 6X users will start to receive the over-the-air (OTA) update starting today in batches. Let us know in the comments on your experience with the brand new EMUI.

In the box:
  • Honor 5C

Design & Hardware

There's a striking difference that I notice immediately when I picked up the phone. Unlike any previous honor smartphones, the honor 5C is the first to have the honor's logo on its front face.

The rounded back design makes the honor 5C a joy to hold in the hands. Of course, the just-the-right-size and material choice also contributes to the superior handling feel of the phone.

The screen panel is pre-laminated with a screen protector.

SIM slot at the top left.

Both power button and volume rocker are positioned at the right.

Despite the design of the speaker grill resembles a stereo configuration, but the 5C only comes with a mono speaker located under the right speaker grill.

Meanwhile, the left speaker grill houses the microphone.

The fingerprint scanner is strategically positioned for index fingerprint scanning.

If you have read our review for the honor 5X previously, chances are you already know that the honor's Fingerprint Identification 2.0 technology is capable of unlocking your device in 0.5 seconds.

Nano SIM tray where the second SIM slot can be fitted with 256GB micro SD card for expanded storage. That means if you will have to choose whether to have dual SIM or single SIM + micro SD configuration.

Display

The 1080p Full HD IPS display is great. Good viewing angle and accurate colour reproduction. I suppose the display industry has advanced into a stage where even mid-ranged phone owners can enjoy a nice high definition display that doesn't make your eye bleed.

Camera

The camera on the honor 5C works really well in most situations and I'm really glad that honor actually put a lot of effort into optimising the camera application so that the image outcome would be great.

By default, the camera is capable of managing the exposure intelligently and capture as much information and details as possible.

If your mind is full of creative ideas, there's Pro photo mode for manual exposure.

What's new in EMUI 4.1 is the addition of Pro video mode.

Here's some samples taken with honor 5C.

Software & Benchmark

honor 5C runs the latest version of Huawei's Emotion UI, EMUI 4.1, which is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

In EMUI 4.1, the most obvious change we can observe is the implementation of Material Design throughout the OS and factory default applications. Camera, phone, gallery and several other apps also receive updated features and fixes along the way. I'd say the fourth iteration of the EMUI is more geared towards the improvement of user experience.

Some benchmarks if you from Antutu and Geekbench if you're into numbers.

Final Thoughts - Actual Usage Performance & Battery Life

The battery life of honor 5C is astonishingly good. Unplugged in the morning 11am, then heavy usage for 13 hours till 12am, and I manage to pull 6 hours of screen on time with 9% battery left. How awesome is that? I believe the Kirin 650's 16nm architecture is showing it's efficiency there.

Apart from the SoC efficiency, the battery life is also affected by the smart app & battery management under EMUI and they're not so smart if you left it in default. The OS would automatically choose which app is more critical and set it as "protected" app which allows it to run after the screen is turned off.

For instance, the OS deemed my Carousell app is non-critical, hence the app never run in the background. That actually causes the app for not displaying any notification at all. Not to mentioned the Dropbox or Google Photos would not automatically backup my photos if I never manually set them as "protected". I mean, that is not users really want, right?

Although this issue could be easily be resolved if we manually configure the behaviour of the power management, but I think there must be some other way to improve battery life.

All in all, at the price of RM 799, no doubt this mid-ranger is one of the best bang-for-buck that costs under RM 1000.

Pros:
  • Clean & compact packaging
  • Excellent build quality
  • Aluminium alloy back design
  • Dual SIM
  • MicroSD card support
  • Fast and responsive fingerprint scanner
  • Excellent display
  • Great rear camera quality
  • Excellent front camera quality
  • Good performance
  • Excellent battery life
  • Price

Cons:
  • Software

Packaging

Honor 5X is rocking their signature baby blue themed packaging with minimalist branding.

The box fits the phone like a glove yet providing sufficient protection to the phone.

We have the gold model of the Honor 5X in our labs. Of course it also comes in white and grey models.

In the box:
  • Honor 5X
  • 3pin USB charger
  • USB cable
  • Product guides and warranty

Design & Hardware

For a 5.5 incher, the Honor 5X is having the size of a standard phablet. While my hands are not I'd called big, but I still manage to hold the phone single handed comfortably, just.... forget about operating it one-handed.

The back aluminium alloy panel is a masterpiece completed with 4 different finishing process:

Aircraft grade aluminium alloy is crafted and diamond polished, followed by a special brushing technique for the consistent brushed finish. The sides are sand-blasted to complement the phone's shiny CNC milled chamfer. The Honor logo is finally laser-etched to produce an understated yet premium feel.

End result? Sleek and premium, not just to the eyes, but to the hands as well. You can't tell this is a sub-RM1000 smartphone.

Rear camera module protrudes out slightly.

That's not really good as you can never have your phone placed flat on surface and you risk scratching the chromed camera housing or worst, the lens. Nevertheless, most of the phones in the market are still having the exact same design despite all the cons.

The fingerprint sensor is strategically placed at the back so that you can unlock the phone when your pull out the phone from your pocket.

One thing worth mentioning is that the scanner is absolutely accurate and fast. With just 6 touch registration, it is able to recognize the fingerprint and unlocks the device in 0.5 seconds!

Sensors and front 5 MP camera.

SIM slot and memory card slot at the top left.

Power button and volume rocker at the right.

The power button is textured differently from the volume rocker.

There's only single speaker at the bottom despite the double grill design.

Microphone at the left while speaker at the right.

Display

1080p full HD display has become quite a norm nowadays even for a mid-ranged phones.

The 5.5 inch IPS panel renders the colour accurately and the viewing angle is absolutely great.

Camera

The rear camera comes with a decent 13MP sensor coupled with a reasonably wide angle lens. At f/2.0 aperture, the lens is bright enough for low light shots as well as producing those dreamy out of focus effect.

Although the front camera is only a 5MP shooter, but it took us by surprise with a wide angle lens. At 22mm that is wider than most of the smartphones in the market.

Software

Honor 5X is running Emotion UI (EMUI) 3.1 which is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Overall, the UI does resembles iOS a lot, such as the absent of app drawer and rounded square app icons.

Final Thoughts - Actual Usage Performance & Battery Life

As the 5X is positioned as a mid-ranger, you can't really expect it to perform as well as the flagships or it's brother - Honor 7. The coupling of Snapdragon 615 octa-core SoC and 2GB RAM is more than enough to handle your regular apps with minor stuttering between frames. Hey's that's still better than those low-end phones right?

Battery life is great, at 14 hours of total run time since unplug, I manage to squeeze a total of 4.5 hours of screen on time out of the 3000mAh battery from the 5X. That is achieved without any app optimization.

Of course Android 6.0 Marshmallow is scheduled to release for 5X and we expect it to further improve the overall performance and battery life.

Pros:
  • Clean & compact packaging
  • Aluminium alloy body design
  • Excellent build quality
  • Dual SIM
  • MicroSD card support
  • Fast and responsive fingerprint scanner
  • Excellent display
  • Great rear camera quality
  • Excellent front camera quality
  • Good performance
  • Great battery life
  • Price

Cons:
  • Software
